boy or girl?

My client was expecting her second child and asked me to help her with the nursery. I was thrilled for her and her husband. We had already done her sons "big boy" room after he was done with his crib. I really loved the Lu Lu DK fabric we used on the toy chests and sconces. We had the duvet custom made in a Hinson check fabric and the sheets are Restoration Hardware.

The hitch for this second baby was... she didn't want to know the sex.

Hmmmmmm, so what's a designer to do but design two rooms, one for a boy and one for a girl, and try not to open her big fat mouth every time she had a meeting with the client.

So we sat down and finalized fabrics first:

pale pink, lavender and grays for a Girl.

pale yellow and blue for a Boy.

After already doing a boy's room for her I knew I was rooting for a girl. I was so in love with the Katherine Ireland fabrics we had chosen...

I was shaking when she gave me the envelope from the doctor's office containing the super secret sex. I let it sit on my desk for a week! I was so terrified of spilling the beans and ruining everything but I had to know so I could get ordering fabrics. I had never worked under such a literal ticking clock.

We scrambled into high gear. Had the rocking chair reupholstered. The fabric sent to the laminators. The crib skirt and bumper were in the works. I had the painters on hold for the week of her due date. The wool area rug was cut, bound and ready to go.
I did get grandparents trying to bribe me for information and I don't think I looked my client in the eye the whole time, afraid I'd shout it out at any moment. It was stressful in a good way to say the least.

So, the birth plan was - when you go into labor text me.
It sounds so crazy but what else is a girl to do? After a contraction call your decorator, of course.

It's a girl!
